CFB27 Road to Glory Gets Three New Positions

Road to Glory is getting three new playable positions in College Football 27: Tight End, Edge Rusher, and Free Safety. These additions expand the career mode beyond the traditional quarterback, running back, wide receiver, and linebacker options, giving players new ways to experience the journey from high school standout to college star. Each position offers unique gameplay mechanics, skill trees, and career narratives that make them feel distinct rather than simply being reskins of existing positions.

Tight End: the hybrid career path

Tight End may be the most requested offensive addition because it sits between two football worlds. A receiving tight end can attack seams, create mismatch problems against linebackers and safeties, and function as the primary option in the passing game — essentially a wide receiver in a bigger frame. A blocking tight end can define the edge of the run game, seal defensive ends on outside zone plays, and provide crucial pass protection on play-action concepts. The dual skill trees let you specialize in one path or build a balanced tight end who can contribute in both phases. The receiving tree emphasizes route running, catching in traffic, and yards after contact. The blocking tree focuses on run blocking strength, pass protection footwork, and blitz pickup recognition. Players who build balanced tight ends unlock unique abilities that neither pure receiver nor pure blocker builds can access.

Edge Rusher: the most active defensive addition

Edge Rusher is the new position with the clearest mechanical identity. EA says Edge Rushers can use Jump the Snap, a timing mechanic that rewards precise reactions to the ball being snapped. A perfectly timed jump gives the edge rusher an explosive first step that can beat even elite offensive tackles off the line, creating immediate pressure on the quarterback. The position features three archetypes: Speed Rusher (prioritizing quickness and bend around the edge), Power Rusher (using strength and bull rush techniques to collapse the pocket), and Hybrid (mixing speed and power moves with the ability to drop into short zone coverage). Each archetype unlocks different pass rush moves, counter-moves, and abilities as you progress through the college career.

Free Safety: control the back end

Free Safety is the most strategic of the three additions. It is about space, timing, anticipation, and decision-making. Free safeties read the quarterback, diagnose route combinations, and decide whether to break on a route, stay deep, or support the run. The position features two primary archetypes: Center Field (ball-hawking style focused on interceptions, range, and pass breakup ability) and Box Safety (run-support style focused on tackling, blitz timing, and short-zone coverage). The Center Field safety patrols the deep middle, with abilities that highlight route development and quarterback intentions. The Box Safety plays closer to the line, with run-fit responsibilities and the ability to disguise coverage intentions pre-snap. Your choice of archetype determines not just your skill tree but also how the AI positions you pre-snap and what camera angles you see during plays.

The high school phase makes new positions more meaningful

The new positions feed directly into the Building Your Tape high school phase with position-specific objectives. A tight end's tape is evaluated on receiving production, blocking grade, and red zone efficiency. An edge rusher's tape is evaluated on sacks, pressures, and run defense. A free safety's tape is evaluated on interceptions, passes defended, and tackles. These position-specific evaluations determine which programs offer scholarships and at what priority level, making your high school performance at each position feel genuinely consequential.
